Sector Specific Quality Management System
Standards
Off-late there has been a proliferation of sector
specific quality standards. These executive-briefings
introduce to the principles, applicability and
key requirements of these sector specific standards
and the certification process.
Health Services - IWA 1:2005
IWA 1:2005 provides additional guidance for any
health service organization involved in the management,
delivery, or administration of health service
products or services, including training and/or
research, in the life continuum process for human
beings, regardless of type, size and the product
or service provided.
Education – IWA 2:2003
International Workshop Agreement IWA 2:2003 provides
guidelines for the application of ISO 9001:2000
in educational organizations providing educational
products.
These guidelines do not add to, change or modify
the requirements of ISO 9001:2000, and are not
intended for use in contracts for compliance assessments
or for certification.
Each clause of ISO 9001:2000 is included before
the corresponding text of IWA 2:2003. The whole
text of ISO 9004:2000 is also included to provide
a complete vision of the continual performance
improvement of organizations.
Local Government – IWA 4:2005
IWA 1:2005 provides additional guidance for any
local government organization fir implementing
Quality management systems. It provides guidelines
for the application of ISO 9001:2000 in local
government
Automotive Industry – ISO/TS 16949:2002
ISO/TS 16949 forms the requirements or the application
of ISO 9001 for automotive production and relevant
service part organizations.
ISO/TS 16949 uses the ISO 9001:2000 Standard as
the basis for their development and has included
the requirements from these Standards with specific
'adders' for the automotive supply chain. The
2002 revision of TS builds off the ISO 9001:2000
document.
Laboratories – ISO/IEC 17025:2005
ISO/IEC 17025:2005 specifies the general requirements
for the competence to carry out tests and/or calibrations,
including sampling. It covers testing and calibration
performed using standard methods, non-standard
methods, and laboratory-developed methods.
It is applicable to all organizations performing
tests and/or calibrations. These include, for
example, first-, second- and third-party laboratories,
and laboratories where testing and/or calibration
forms part of inspection and product certification.
ISO/IEC 17025:2005 is for use by laboratories
in developing their management system for quality,
administrative and technical operations. Laboratory
customers, regulatory authorities and accreditation
bodies may also use it in confirming or recognizing
the competence of laboratories.
Food Processing – HACCP and ISO
22000
ISO 22000:2005 specifies requirements for a food
safety management system where an organization
in the food chain needs to demonstrate its ability
to control food safety hazards in order to ensure
that food is safe at the time of human consumption.
It is applicable to all organizations, regardless
of size, which are involved in any aspect of the
food chain and want to implement systems that
consistently provide safe products. The means
of meeting any requirements of ISO 22000:2005
can be accomplished through the use of internal
and/or external resources.
ISO 22000:2005 specifies requirements to enable
an organization
-- to plan, implement, operate, maintain and update
a food safety management system aimed at providing
products that, according to their intended use,
are safe for the consumer,
-- to demonstrate compliance with applicable statutory
and regulatory food safety requirements,
-- to evaluate and assess customer requirements
and demonstrate conformity with those mutually
agreed customer requirements that relate to food
safety, in order to enhance customer satisfaction,
-- to effectively communicate food safety issues
to their suppliers, customers and relevant interested
parties in the food chain,
-- to ensure that the organization conforms to
its stated food safety policy,
-- to demonstrate such conformity to relevant
interested parties, and
-- to seek certification or registration of its
food safety management system by an external organization,
or make a self-assessment or self-declaration
of conformity to ISO 22000:2005.
Petroleum, Petrochemical and Natural Gas
Industry – ISO/TS 29001:2003
ISO/TS 29001:2003 defines the quality management
system requirements for the design, development,
production, installation and service of products
for the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas
industries, based on ISO 9001:2000.
Limits are addressed on claims of conformity to
ISO/TS 29001:2003 if exclusions are made.
ISO/TS 29001:2003 does not address competitive
or commercial matters such as price, warranties,
guarantees, or clauses intended to sustain commercial
objectives.
IT Services – BS 15000
BS15000 is the world's first standard for IT service
management. The standard specifies a set of inter-related
management processes, and is based heavily upon
the ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) framework.
It consists of 7 sets: Managers Set; Service Support;
Service Delivery; Software Support; Networks;
Computer Operations; Environmental.
Retail Industry - BRC
In 1998 the British Retail Consortium, responding
to industry needs, developed and introduced the
BRC Food Technical Standard to be used to evaluate
manufacturers of retailers own brand food products.
In a short space of time, this Standard became
invaluable to other organisations across the sector.
The Standard was created to establish a standard
for the supply of food products and to act as
key piece of evidence for UK retailers and brand
owners to demonstrate 'due diligence*' in the
face of potential prosecution by the enforcement
authorities. This publication has now become the
international mark of excellence. Certification
to the Standard verifies technical competence
and aids manufacturers, brand owners and retailers
fulfilment of legal obligations. It also safeguards
the consumer. The retail industry, food manufacturers,
importers, caterers, ingredient suppliers and
the food service industry can all benefit greatly
from this essential Standard. The Standard is
currently used by suppliers in Europe, Africa,
the Middle East, Asia, the Far East, Australasia,
North and South America - a truly global Standard.
Packaging Industry – BRC/IOP
This Standard is most applicable to manufacturers
of food contact packaging for retailers’
labelled products and branded products as well.
Manufacturers have an obligation to put appropriate
systems and controls in place to ensure the suitability
of their packaging for safe food use.
